And A Good Time Was Had By All
Diane Schweitzer sat down in front of her typewriter in 1970. Unbeknownst to her, she was about to launch a new sport. What would she write? Would anyone read her invitation to join her family at the beach? If they read it, would they show up? Would the weather cooperate? She didn't know, but one thing was for sure: she was going with her family and friends and would have a great time regardless of what else happened.

The Notice of Race that Diane typed that day announced the first WINDSURFING INVITATIONAL WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP. It was sent to 24 people in late January 1970 and was the beginning of what would soon evolve into the largest one-design sailing class in the sailing world.

A few weeks later, Diane would again sit in front of her typewriter. This time, she would have much to say. There were regatta results to report, upcoming races to announce, new sailors and friends to include in her mailing. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and her efforts to make everyone feel welcome were sincere. Diane would regularly sum up regatta results and post-race get-togethers with: "and a good time was had by all".

The WINDSURFING NEWS newsletter was born. It set the tone for the sport for the next 20 years and heralded a new world of wholesome fun, friendly competitive regattas and parties. This California beach culture newsletter emphasized inclusion for all and played a major role in Europe's eventual attraction to, and obsession with the sport. In years to come, the newsletter would evolve into a full-sized four-color magazine, with almost 90 pages of articles and advertising.
