The Original Windsurfer
1968: Windsurfing's first enthusiasts

The original boat was called a "SK8". Once the post-launch-party modification to make the sail free to rotate while remaining attached to the board had been made, it then became a free-sail system. Hoyle Schweitzer, Jim Drake, and friend Allen Parducci, were able to sail it well. Allen was involved in many of the initial discussions and also constructed a prototype out of wood.

November
While driving down Pacific Coast Highway in California, Bert Salisbury (in town on business) saw Hoyle sailing off the coast.

Bert, dressed in suit and tie with black shoes, stops his car and runs down on the beach signalling Hoyle to sail to shore. Bert was so excited that he delayed his trip home to Seattle and the next day Hoyle taught him how to sail. That afternoon Bert purchased the first board.

December
After struggling with different ways to package the board for shipment to Bert, the Schweitzers figure out a way to package it.
