January The first Windsurfer shipped to Hawaii was ordered by Larry Trombley and shipped to the North Shore of Oahu. Larry would introduce the Windsurfer to a group that would later be known as the "Kailua Kids". They would be at the forefront of wave-sailing and would take the sport and the equipment to the next generation. May Windsurfing News newsletter reports, "The latest craze is windsurfing breaking waves. It's the infinite right at Malibu and watching Gary and Hoyle there last week was truly a magnificent sight." |

September/October Hoyle and Diane hit the boat show circuit: Rhode Island, Annapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles and Long Beach. Although Hoyle and Diane represented the "new generation" to the sailing establishment at boat shows, they were greeted warmly; it seemed the world was abuzz with the possibilities and potential of their Windsurfer. December Perpetual trophies were awarded to the sailor who scored best in the 20 races held in Southern California that year. Bruce Matlack and young Matt Schweitzer took top honors. Jamie Budge filmed and interviewed some of the pioneers In 1971, 325 Windsurfers were sold. |
