Jim Drake sells his contribution in the "SK8" prototype and his portion of the patent for the Free Sail System to Hoyle Schweitzer.

The Windsurfer Nationals held in southern California at Mission Bay, San Diego attracts international entrants and turns into an international event and the first World Championships.

License was granted to manufacture the Windsurfer in Japan.

In 1973, 1,409 Windsurfers were sold worldwide, 706 in Europe and 703 in the U.S.
